Concrete for Kids

Concrete for Kids is a project in which Civil & Environmental Engineering students visit local elementary schools. The goal of the project is to provide elementary students exposure to what civil engineers do. The students make and test concrete beams, and learn about the various properties of concrete.

Concrete for Kids is a community service, reach-out program to local elementary and middle schools in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area. A group of engineering students from Virginia Tech goes to a classroom, teaches the students about civil engineering, and then getting their hands dirty and mix concrete.

The following week we discuss about compression and tensile strength, and then break the concrete beams. We act as mentors, and encourage the students along the way, such as collecting the correct measurements to mixing the concrete itself.

Concrete for Kids is a fun way of developing leadership, public speaking, and confidence in making concrete.

Contact the Concrete for Kids captains for more information on how you can get involved.
